Honeycrisp Apple Tree

4-ft standard (stem) in a 7-gallon pot

Dig a large hole, replace any rocks or poor soil with good, rich soil. Some old compost can be added to the soil (mix well). As planting, water the planting hole well, add some soil, set the tree, add water, soil, water, soil, etc. Wiggle and move the tree slightly to help the roots settle in the wet soil. Plant at the same level as it was in the pot, not deeper.

For the first year, set two planting stakes to support the tree. Make sure the surfaces that rub against the trunk are soft. Remove the stakes after the first year.

For the first year, water deeply every week or two, depending on the weather, until early September. Allow the soil to dry between waterings. Sometimes the surface is dry but the soil underneath is still wet; do not water then. Use a small trowel or a stick to check soil moisture 1″ to 2″ under the surface. When dry, water deeply; when wet, skip watering.

Do not let mulch or soil pile up higher than the original planting depth. Covering part of the trunk with mulch increases the chance of diseases of the bark.

For the first 2-3 years, remove any flowers. This will help with two things: allow proper development of roots and branches and make the tree more resistant to disease.

For the first 2-3 years prune mercilessly. Form the shape of the tree as required (there are numerous schemes and guides available online). Among other things, this will help avoid one graft being much more vigorous than others, at the expense of the others. Prune away any excessive growth to avoid slower-growing grafts to develop properly.

Remember applying dormant oil spray each spring.
