Mail order for Clematis and Vines (Anywhere in Canada, DORMANT only)
$50.00
This is a from-home business run by a mother of four :). I ship differently than bigger companies; please read below. Thanks and happy planning your garden!
This year (2025) I mail *certain* clematis/vines, dormant, anywhere in Canada.
1. Add your plants to the cart.
2. Add this fee to your cart. Select an option below, depending on the size of your order.
3. On the checkout page, DON’T select “by mail in Canada”. Instead, select “Pick up in Halifax”. Your order will be mailed.
4. Clematis/vine branches will be trimmed to 2″-4″ height. Plants will be dormant (no leaves).
5. Plants will be mailed in late March to early April anywhere in Canada, using a flat rate shipping box.
6. What vines can be mailed?
From the section Clematis and Vines on the website:
– Honeysuckles won’t be mailed. No exception.
– Clematis can be mailed: only those that are in 1-gallon pots. And, Boulevard series clematis won’t be mailed.
– Wisteria Blue Moon in 1 gallon pots can be mailed.
– Climbing hydrangea in 1-gallon pots can be mailed.
– Jasmine vines can be mailed.
7. Your clematis will likely flower later this same year. Plants are guaranteed to be the correct variety. The first year’s flowers might not be as large or double as flowers on a more mature plant; this is normal.
Instructions and Warranty
Upon receiving, plant (indoors or outdoors, depending on your climate) and start watering slightly (about half a cup to a cup) once to twice a week. Allow to dry out for a day or two before watering again: the pot with the plant should be light by weight, and the soil should be dry to touch before you water it again. If your growing zone does not allow for planting outdoors yet, grow indoors in the sunniest location until ready to be planted outdoors.
Avoid growing under grow lights unless you have experience with specifically those lamps. Growing in low light conditions would result in new branches growing too weak, thin and spindly. If you notice this occurring, increase sunlight exposure.
Depending on temperature, you should notice buds growing and young leaves appearing within a few days to a couple weeks, longer if the temperatures are cooler.
Plant outdoors when the weather is consistently warm. To get more sunlight, your vine can be brought outdoors for the day, if the weather is above 14 degrees C, and inside for colder nights.
Once your vine is planted outdoors, water every 1-2 days for a week, then twice a week for a month, unless there was sufficient rain. Continue watering 1-2 times a week, depending on the weather, until September. Next year your vine would need water only as needed, during dry weeks.
Notify me of any problems within about 2 months of the plant arriving, with details and pictures, where possible.
Plants are guaranteed to arrive in good condition. If you use garden pruners to snip off a small piece from the top of the vine, the vine should be light green inside. That means it is alive.
Overwintering of USDA zone 4 plants is guaranteed if your growing zone is USDA 5 or warmer. If the plant is one full USDA zone hardier than your location, I will guarantee overwintering. (A vine hardy to USDA zone 3 is guaranteed in areas with USDA zone 4 or warmer, etc).
You should be fine growing a hardy-to-your-zone plant, but I won’t provide warranty just in case you are in a colder pocket, or the winter is a couple degrees colder than usual. You might want to provide a little winter protection to your plants if their hardiness equals to that of your growing zone, just in case.
Please do your own research as to what growing conditions each plant requires.
The checkout page may say “Plant ABC in your cart cannot be mailed”. If all your plants are “mailable” as per the explanation above, just ignore that notification.
If mailing more than 5 vines, add an extra $50 for shipping for each group of up to 5 vines.
Please read all the text above before ordering.
