Native to most of Canada, including Nova Scotia.

Its natural habitat areas are wet sites in flood plains, shaded banks of rivers, along stream banks, wet ditches, forests, and wet fields or pastures.

Plants are pest resistant and foliage is unpalatable to deer and other herbivores.

This species is not very drought tolerant.
