Paeonia japonica, aka woodland peony (species)
One of the earliest blooming from all species peonies. Thrives in the shade. Blooms are fragrant.
Their natural habitat is on the edge of a deciduous forest where they receive full sun in the early spring and are then shielded from the strong summer sun by the leaf canopy. These peonies can be grown in a shadier area where other peonies would not grow or flower.
In the mid-to-late summer, the seed pods burst open to reveal cobalt blue and scarlet seeds, which is an added attraction of this plant.
Expect these woodland herbaceous peonies to grow to between 1 ft. to 1.5 ft. tall and 2 ft. wide. Flower size is about 3″.
Do NOT use mushroom compost with these peonies.
Young plant, will reach blooming size after 1-2 growing seasons.
