Northern Bayberry (native; salt-tolerant, stabilizes shorelines)
$49.00
Northern Bayberry
Myrica pensylvanica
Tolerates salt spray and urban pollution. Useful for controlling erosion and stabilizing shorelines.
Fragrant foliage. Can be used as a hedge.
If you site them in a wind-sheltered site, the foliage will likely last most if not all of the winter. However, in an exposed site, the plant loses its foliage in winter. This is often desirable since bare branches tend to enhance the ornamental value of the showy berries in winter.
This is a wonderful shrub for bird-watchers since the berries provide ample food and the branches create perches for small birds.
This shrub can thrive in low-quality soil that is unsuitable for many other plants but expect the best results when grown in rich, moist, but well-drained soil. Bayberry thrives in damp conditions, and established plants will not need water often when grown in moist soil.
