Cucumber Tree (Magnolia acuminata)
Canada’s only native magnolia species, and also the hardiest. Large, bell-shaped greenish-yellow flowers. Unripe seed pods resemble cucumbers, hence the common name. The fruit is not edible.

A low-maintenance native tree that is not prone to serious pests or diseases. Must be watered regularly while establishing.
Prefers organically rich, well-drained loams in full sun to part shade.
Generally intolerant of soil extremes (dry or wet). Intolerant of most urban pollutants.
Unlike most magnolias, this tree often produces respectable fall color (gold).
2-gallon plant. Might not bloom while young.
