Japanese Hakone Grass

A shade-loving plant.
A vigorously growing, all gold version of the Hakone grass. A slow grower. Spreads slowly by underground rhizomes. Never invasive.
There are few grasses that perform well in the shade that also have ornamental value.
Best grown in humusy, consistently moist, well-drained soils in part shade. Tolerates close to full shade, particularly in the hot summer climates. Best growth occurs in climates with cool summer temperatures.
Plant foliage will burn in full sun locations and lose color intensity in full shade. Mulch in winter. Trim foliage to the ground in late winter to early spring before the new shoots emerge. Tolerant of urban growing conditions including air pollution.
Clumps can eventually get 2’ high and 3’ wide, although they often stay smaller than this.
